We organised ‘Earth Day’ at the start of May in our school. This was so much fun, and allowed us to involve the whole community in our efforts to become a Green School.

First, we encouraged anyone who could to walk or cycle to school, to reduce the pollution from our cars. We also made a big effort to ditch single-use plastic for the day, such as sandwich bags or water bottles.

We also organised a Battery Hunt – this was a huge success! Each class was asked to bring in used batteries from home, with the promise of extra P.E. for the class who brought in the most. Our hunt took on a life of its own, with some students visiting relatives and neighbours to collect and recycle batteries. We collected and counted an absolutely incredible 10,755 batteries in total! M. Eoin’s class took charge of sorting and counting them – you can see them in action below. We are so proud of the difference we have made in our community.

Finally, we organised a Litter Pick involving the whole school. Each class was assigned a time and an area to clean, and we used the new litter pickers that we bought to make sure there was no rubbish left anywhere around our school or in Carrigtwohill.
