Physical Activity
Physical Activity is the promotion and engagement of exercise and movement in addition to the 60 minute per week timetabled curriculum subject of Physical Education. Here at Scoil Chlíodhna we actively promote the message that children require 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. We have been extremely busy as we have engaged in a wide variety of different programmes, ideas and initiatives which have inspired the children to become more active.
In addition to PE lessons pupils take part in many fun activities to stay active. Our school day is regularly revitalised within the classroom with ‘brain break’ activities such as yoga, dance, aerobics and Zumba thanks to the Go Noodle website and teacher led physical movement breaks. These regular brain breaks boost energy levels fuelling the children’s brains for further learning. Teachers also use activity throughout the curriculum. For example maths trails, nature walks, tours of the school, Deir O Gradaigh as Gaeilge. These breaks are particularly important on rainy days when we can’t get outside and movement breaks are extended on these days.
Scoil Chlíodhna promotes the full range of fundamental movement skills during break times and pupils are encouraged to be as active as possible. We have two daily playground breaks and our school yard is zoned at big break and marked to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities. Our school has playground leaders who set up activities and sports equipment during break times for children to use. We also make use of the pitch at lunch time for soccer!
